HIGH-ASPECT-RATIO MICA FOR COMPOSITE PLASTIC SYSTEMS

High-aspect-ratio muscovite mica is widely used as a reinforcing filler and extender in composite plastic systems because of its functional, morphological and surface characteristics. The addition of mica in plastic polymer compounds improves its material properties significantly, such as, higher heat deflaction temperature, increase tensile and flexural strengths, reduce isotropic shrinkage and permeability, enhance the dielectric, heat resisting and insulating properties, better surface properties, etc. In fact, mica is an unique mineral which offers the multiple advantage of high-spect-ratio, high thermal stability and multi directional lateral reinforcement to composite plastic systems. Besides, mica also offers plastic compounders a potential substitute for more expensive fibreglass reinforcements. No other products provide such functional enhancement to a wide range of plastic polymer compounds as superior quality and excellent dimentional stability than mica.

Mica has established its applications in a wide variety of plastic polymer compounds, namely, polyolefin, polyamide, polyster, polyurethane/ polyurea, polypropylene, ABS, PA, Polycarbonate, Fluoro-polymers, PPO, Polysulfone, PU thermoplastic resins and thermosets (epoxy, phenolics, UPST (Unsaturated polyster), etc.

PP is, by far, the most popular use of mica. Mica-filled PP is chiefly used for reinforcement of RRIM (Reinforced Reaction injection Moulded) automotive parts, such as, fan blades, dashboard panels floor and grill panels, plastic seats, ignition system parts, air-conditioning heater housing including fascia and fenders fixed next to steel parts while maintaining a similar appearances and similar coefficient of thermal expansion. Mica provides superior dimentional stability, virtually eliminate warpage and produce a superior painted surface. It also provides an excellent sound attenuation and barrier properties. Mica replaces asbestos in acoustic compounds that eliminate road and engine noise.
